Impregnable embattled ancient city Petra aged more than two thousand years and is considered now one of the current Seven Wonders of the World. Rock cut palaces and tombs, majestic temples, endless staircases, columns and arches… Only time is more ancient than these stones.
Petra is a legendary city with at least 4 thousand years’ history. Being a natural stronghold carved in sheer rocky walls of a narrow valley, Petra was the capital of numerous ancient kingdoms. Even in the Bible one can find a record of it: it was here that Moses struck water out of the rock and gave it to his thirsty people roaming about the desert.
The crusaders were the last owners of rose red city Petra. After they left Palestine the city was forgotten for a long time. At the end of the XIX century the Swiss traveler Johann Ludwig Burckhardt quite by chance discovered the lost city during his dangerous trip. And now everyone can visit the legendary ancient ruins.
One of the most majestic structures in Petra is the so-called Treasury. Its excellently preserved façade is carved in a huge rock entirely and still amazes everyone with its size.
