The donations for the Brazil’s statue of Christ the Redeemer came from Rio de Janeiro residents. It took only a year for the City Hall to collect 2.2 million reais to start the building of the statue in the jubilee year of Brazilian independence. Brazilian artists and engineers created the sketches, but the statue was carved in France and brought to Brazil in pieces. The fragments of the statue were raised to the Peak of Corcovado Mountain by tiny vans of the first electrified railway.
The monument was officially unveiled and hallowed in 1931, nine years after the construction started. Since then Jesus opens his blessing hands over Rio de Janeiro area. In 2007 the statue was listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
From the observation deck at the pedestal opens a magnificent view of the city and the bay with its famous beaches.
